Mother’s Day in Miami

May 13, 2012

Miami is a unique place for mothers: we get to celebrate mother’s day twice every year. In the US, mother’s day is celebrated in May, but in Latin America it’s in October. Since Miami has such a high concentration of Latin population, many families end up celebrating both dates. Areas like Aventura, Sunny Isles, and Doral have a high number of families from Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico and other Latin American countries and the fusion between cultures creates a very international flare. Americans in Miami are already used to empanadas, dulce de leche, tapas, enchiladas, arepas and other Latin delicacies. Dance schools or clubs with salsa or tango receive equal numbers of American and Latin customers. Spanish can be heard everywhere…

Buildings like Oceania and Acqualina in Sunny Isles or Williams Island in Aventura have their own restaurants for residents and organize events so that mothers don’t have to cook or even stand in line at a crowded cafe, and can enjoy a soothing ocean view while sharing a warm family time.

Mother’s Day brunches in Miami often include “mojitos” and “mimosas” (orange and champagne). The mix of cultures is a win win situation: Latin moms get to celebrate twice, and American moms get dined and wined with a variety of exotic foods and sparkly music. And with places like Aventura, Sawgrass, and Bal Harbor Malls there are gifts for every budget.
